Closed, empty and with blank screens during the lockdown, movie theaters are right back at the heart of Locarno 2020 – For the Future of Films. An edition focused on the recovery of the film industry and the future of auteur cinema is duty bound to make a real contribution to bringing films back to the big screen and in front of theater audiences. The Locarno Film Festival has decided to literally invest in the return to movie theaters, to the darkened screening rooms that are vital to the cinema experience. And it does so with numerous initiatives, engaging both Festivalgoers and the broader community of cinephiles. One of these is a significant project called Closer to Life, developed together with Mobiliare, the partner that wished to aim at the heart of this edition, sharing its spirit of solidarity.
Concerning the films that are on hold, which are part of the selection of The Films After Tomorrow, the Festival has decided to promote the theatrical distribution of some films from Locarno72, whose cinema release was compromised by the global health crisis.
During Locarno 2020, anyone can support independent movie theaters in Switzerland via the Festival website, with a PayPal donation.
