We are working for you, and for cinema: the Pardo will be waiting in Piazza Grande this August, ready to roar again.
What's Locarno74 going to be like? You will find out over the next few weeks, but in the meantime we wish to share our goal with you: to reconvene in front of a big screen, on August 4-14. On this page, we will tell you about the edition we're imagining and crafting, step by step. There are two cornerstones: everyone's health, and the films, be they in the Piazza or the other theaters within a city that becomes a Festival.
If we think of Locarno74, the first image is of what we missed the most last summer: Piazza Grande. Our main goal is to bring it back, and we are building towards it with all the care and attention such a momentous occasion demands. Not forgetting, of course, all that precedes those magical nights on a daily basis.
Yes, Piazza Grande will be there. We do not yet know how many people will be allowed inside, and we're working on it in direct contact with the authorities to give a unique, magical, yet safe experience. If there's one thing we want more than any other, it's reconvening in the Piazza, which now more than ever is the symbol of the Locarno Film Festival.
We will unveil the program on July 1, but we've been working on it for months, day by day. Then again, it has been the heart of each edition, for 74 years. There will be hundreds of films, be they world premieres or gems ripe for rediscovery, jumping from one section to the next, on the hunt, as always, for the Pardo d'oro.
Tickets and contact tracing
Not only is it back, it will be essential! During Locarno74, the official app - which we will tell you all about in July - will be vital. Because this year, each seat, at every screening in every theater, will require a name: yours. And with the app, Piazza Grande will also mark the return of the Prix du Public UBS.
A great international festival, with many souls and voices, such as the Locarno Film Festival, is like a workshop constantly brimming with ideas, projects and places of creation. Follow us: there's an entire festival to discover.
We started by opening up submissions, because where can the Locarno Film Festival begin, if not with the films? Then came the Retrospective, the first poster ever designed by you and a "short" addition to the competitions. Yes, Locarno74 has already begun...
Created by the Lugano-based designer Luciano Baragiola, the official image of the 74th edition is a celebration of the history and art of film, in the customary yellow and black. Split into 24 frames, the Pardo becomes even more dynamic, and is ready to attack the richest images of contemporary times.
Who was Alberto Lattuada? Surely, one of the best kept secrets of Italian cinema. After the appetizer that was The Boarder at L'immagine e la parola 2021, Locarno74 will offer a complete journey into one of the more diverse and unconventional filmographies of the 1900s.
Long live short films! The Pardi di domani section is introducing a third, brand-new competition, for the short works of established filmmakers, whose vision will cross paths with that of the directors of tomorrow. It's the entire creative world of the masters, summed up in few, indelible minutes.
