The Locarno Film Festival is a celebration of cinema and its talents which focus widens from new discoveries to leading names in the industry. Each year we honour those whose work has helped to expand the boundaries of the art of filmmaking and at the same time juries of professionals and artists recognised internationally attribute award prizes to the films in competition.
The Concorso internazionale features works shown primarily as world premieres, coming from all over the globe and competing for the prestigious Pardo d’oro.
The selection of first or second works, mainly world premieres, directed by emerging talents from all over the world, is judged by a jury composed of three figures who, through their work in different areas of the audiovisual sector, are breathing new life into the language of film.
The short format in all of its aspects, in the selection of short and medium-length films presented as world or international premieres.
Belonging to the category “first feature” are fiction films, documentary, or animated films of over 60 minutes time. To this category cannot be considered film directors whose films have been released or shown already at a film event or theater.
The educational initiative of the Festival is aimed at students aged between 18 and 23. Among the participants of Cinema&Gioventù are designated the youth juries called to evaluate the official competitions of the Locarno Film Festival.
