In Cordoba, in the Arab Andalusia of 1195, the ideas of philosopher and scientist Averroes clashed with the interests of the Caliph and rival religious fanatics. Presented in 1997 at Cannes, where it won the 50th anniversary prize, Chahine’s film is a celebration of poetry and knowledge, against fanaticism and fundamentalism, and prophetic in its anticipation of dramatic scenarios occurring in the present day.
