A small-town elementary school teacher moves to Milan, where he runs into the janitor Pilade, a childhood friend. Ideals vanish upon impact with the big city. The film, which flopped, is “Lattuada’s most Neorealist work, also because of the pathos that runs through it”. (Adriano Aprà)
