The lost and doomed marginals of this ’tragic rondo’ are among Sirk’s greatest characters: fairground aviators adrift in the years of the Great Depression. An adaptation from Faulkner, which Sirk had been thinking about since the 1930s: “Perhaps, after all, it is my best film”. (D. Sirk)
