This copy is the result of the Ultra HD digitisation of the original 35mm camera negative and the final sound mix, on magnetic tape, both elements conserved by Cinemateca. Colour grading and digital restoration of the image were made by Cineric Portugal in 2022 using a distribution print as reference.

The true story of the last years in the life of Lusitanian Romantic writer Camilo Castelo Branco who, afflicted by impending blindness, economic hardship, and emotional disappointments, ultimately committed suicide. Based on his letters, Manoel de Oliveira creates a film of rare severity that probes into and preserves the whole mystery of an artist’s agony in an objective way.
