Le roman de Selma Lagerlöf, déjà adapté par Sjöström, est filmé avec austérité en extérieur dans les landes du nord de l’Allemagne. Servante et mère illégitime, exclue de la communauté, la "fille du marais" se heurte aux préjugés. Sirk reconnaît l’influence de Dreyer.
