Il romanzo di Selma Lagerlöf, già adattato da Sjöström, è filmato con austerità in esterni nelle brughiere della Germania del Nord. Serva e madre illegittima, esclusa dalla comunità, la “ragazza della palude” si scontra con i pregiudizi. Sirk riconosce l’influenza di Dreyer.
