La vie d’un armateur est perturbée par le retour de son beau-frère, qui connaît la vérité sur son passé. Douze ans après l’avoir montée au théâtre, Sirk adapte la pièce d’Ibsen avec des variantes, comme le prologue en Amérique et la scène de la tempête, et souligne l’ironie du titre.
