La vita di un armatore è turbata dal ritorno del cognato, che conosce la verità sul suo passato. Dodici anni dopo averla messa in scena a teatro, Sirk adatta la pièce di Ibsen con varianti, come il prologo in America e la scena della tempesta, e sottolinea l’ironia del titolo.
