Un jeune soldat allemand obtient une permission et vit une histoire d’amour dans un Berlin en ruines. Sirk modifie légèrement le titre du roman de Remarque et suscite l’enthousiasme du jeune Godard: «Son film est beau parce qu’on pense à la guerre en regardant des images d’amour, et vice versa».
