Un giovane soldato tedesco ottiene una licenza e vive una storia d’amore estrema tra le rovine di Berlino. Sirk cambia di poco il titolo del romanzo di Remarque e suscita l’entusiasmo del giovane Godard: «Il suo film è bello perché si pensa alla guerra guardando scorrere immagini d’amore, e viceversa».
