Cevennen, Südfrankreich, 1943: Eine Gruppe von Partisanen greift ein deutsches Gefängnis an, um zwölf politische Gefangene zu befreien. Die Operation gelingt, aber dann kommt noch ein 13. Mann mit einer geheimnisvollen Identität dazu. Costa-Gavras zweiter Spielfilm ist ein spannungsgeladener Kriegswestern, der sein Talent, Hingabe und Spektakel perfekt zu verbinden, bereits erahnen lässt.
