Cévennes, sud de la France, 1943: un groupe de résistants attaque une prison allemande pour libérer douze prisonniers politiques. L’opération est un succès, mais un 13ème homme, à l’identité mystérieuse, s’est glissé parmi eux. Pour son deuxième long métrage, Costa-Gavras signe un western de guerre sous haute tension qui préfigure sa capacité à conjuguer à la perfection engagement et spectacle.
