Cévennes, Francia meridionale, 1943: un gruppo di partigiani attacca un carcere tedesco per liberare dodici prigionieri politici. L’operazione ha successo, ma insieme ad essi si ritrova anche un 13° uomo, dall’identità misteriosa. Alla sua opera seconda, Costa-Gavras firma un western di guerra ad alta tensione, che anticipa la sua capacità di coniugare alla perfezione impegno e spettacolo.
