The Europa Cinemas Label will be awarded for the first time at this year’s Festival del film Locarno, who joins the list of other top European Film Festivals where the Label is awarded – Cannes, Venice, Berlin and Karlovy Vary.
Created in 2003, the Europa Cinemas Label is awarded by a jury comprised of Europa Cinemas member exhibitors to the best European film in the "discovery" sections of four major festivals: Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (Cannes), Giornate Degli Autori (Venice), Panorama (Berlin), East of the West and Competition (Karlovy Vary) and, in 2013, Concorso internazionale and Concorso Cineasti del presente (Locarno).
Label winning films receive the support of the Europa Cinemas Network, with additional promotion and incentives for exhibitors to extend the film’s run on screen. The Label is awarded at a crucial moment in a film’s career: its presentation at a major festival, a strategic stage of its international launch on the international market.
Nadia Dresti, Head of the International activities of the Festival del film Locarno, states: "it is an honor for us to be selected for the new Europa Cinemas Label among few chosen festivals. This new collaboration is one more step - together with the other Industry Days partners Europa International (sales) and Europa Distribution (distribution) - in the direction of a 360-degrees-platform for considerations and actions focused towards sale and distribution. The issues around film commercialization have clearly grown into a priority for the Festival del film Locarno and its Industry Days."
Fatima Djoumer, Head of International Relations at Europa Cinemas: "The Europa Cinemas Label is very much about encouraging and supporting new talent. The Festival del film Locarno is an energetic and ambitious festival, which is committed to the same goal. We are delighted to collaborate with them, therefore, to award the Label there for the first time this year, and to help give the winning film real practical promotional support and an extended exhibition life."
Europa Cinemas is supported by the MEDIA programmes of the European Commission (Brussels), CNC - Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée (France) and Eurimages (Council of Europe, Strasbourg).
The 66th Festival del film Locarno will take place 7-17 August 2013.
