A synaesthetic portrait made between French Polynesia and Brittany, Color-blind follows the restless ghost of Gauguin in excavating the colonial legacy of a post-postcolonial present.

Ever the provocateur when it comes to the traditions of ethnographic cinema, Russell subverts the dogmas of distance by approaching the Marquesas Islands blindly: his eye intially focused on the colors of Gauguin’s paintings, he clears passages here reminiscent of John Taggart’s Rothko Chapel Poem, then joyfully enters the flesh of an image, torn apart by memories of a phosphorescence attributed to the spirits or the dead, or French nuclear tests.
