Introduced by Claire Atherton
Life for a child in this small Hungarian village is one of simple pleasures. But the nearly idyllic world of the children is shattered when Karcsi, their playmate, dies just before his tenth birthday.
There is a time for dreaming, made up of indefinite aspects, and there is a time for growing up, hosting the first aches and coming to terms with the end. This work by the two filmmakers places itself within a precarious balance, between a film on childhood and an inquiry into the first signs of maturity, alternating Bolm’s proximity with the more meta-reflective pictures by Pujol. Editing creates the pauses and connections within the emotional gash, powerfully revealed in the children’s drawings.
