Rakeswar is a peasant who lives modestly from what he grows on the land and trusts the authorities and local notables, such as his neighbor, a big landowner. Rakeswar hopes his son will become a civil servant when he graduates, but his own life is overturned when the neighbor suddenly demands repayment of a mortgage that Rakeswar’s father had taken out. This loan has been repaid, but there is no written proof: it had all been done on trust. For Rakeswar, who is determined to assert his rights, thus begins a long and painful process as he comes up against administrative corruption and the cynicism of his rich neighbor.
