Amitabha, a screenwriter from Calcutta, is on a research trip in the country. When his car breaks down unexpectedly, he is taken in by Bimal, a wealthy tea plantation owner. At Bimal’s house, Amitabha is surprised to find that his benefactor’s wife, Karuna, is the woman he had been in love with years ago and lost because of his own indecisiveness. Bimal, unaware of the past relationship between his wife and his guest, dines with Amitabha and reveals his own character with disarming frankness. The more he learns about Bimal, the more Amitabha realises that the marriage cannot have been happy for Karuna. But does she still love him? Will she ever leave her husband to come back to him?
