With Il Pardo a casa tua Swiss-Italian broadcaster RSI will bring twelve historic films from Piazza Grande directly to viewers via its channels and streaming platform, allowing some of the magical emotions of one of the world’s biggest screens to come alive on the small screen at home during Locarno 2020.
With the project Il Pardo a casa tua, RSI will broadcast online and to households in the canton of Ticino twelve films from the history of Piazza Grande, including eight winners of the Prix du Public UBS. In twelve late-evening slots on RSI LA 1 and for twelve weeks on the Play RSI platform, viewers will be able to relive the stories and emotions of one of the world’s great cinema venues: from Microcosmos, Prix du Public UBS in 1996, to My Beloved Enemy, summer 2018. In a year when giant screen and projection booth cannot transform Piazza Grande into the usual breathtaking open-air theater, 22 years of the venue’s history will be brought straight to Ticino’s homes.
The program has something for all tastes and genres: from nature documentaries (Microcosmos and More Than Honey, 2012) to rockumentary Gotthard (2017). From Swiss film legends (Bruno Ganz in Julia’s Disappearance, 2009) to the stars of neighboring Italy (Diego Abatantuono in My Beloved Enemy), via international auteurs such as Ken Loach with I, Daniel Blake (2016). Movies that were launched in Locarno and either came close to picking up an Oscar (Monsieur Lazhar, 2011), and ones that actually won the coveted statuette (The Lives of Others, 2006). Movies that captured hearts (Gabrielle, 2013 and The Guest, 2018); movies that struck at the core of Swiss identity (Unlikely Heroes, 2014) and tugged at heartstrings the world over (The Big Sick, 2017).
SRG SSR will complete its “Locarno line-up” with two other special programming features from RTS and SRF.
