Gender evaluation 

These statistics include films from: Piazza Grande: Prefestival, Piazza Grande, Concorso internazionale, Concorso Cineasti del presente, Pardi di domani, Fuori concorso and the World premieres of the Open Doors section.  

The gender of direction was calculated based on the SWAN (Swiss Women’s Audiovisual Network) method that defines 4 categories (woman, man, non-binary, and mixed direction). A fifth category was added to include the “prefers not to disclose” choice.

The five genders of direction taken into consideration are the following:
Woman = the directors identify as women.
Man = the directors identify as man.
Non-binary = the directors identify as non-binary.
Not disclosed = the directors’ gender was not disclosed.
Mixed direction = the directors identify heterogeneously as female, male, non-binary or not disclosed.

Submission 

Features 

Direction: 342 women (25,9%), 844 men (64%), 11 non-binary (0,8%), 63 mixed direction (4,8%), 58 not disclosed (4,4%). 

Shorts 

Direction: 961 women (32,8%), 1.584 men (54,1%), 58 non-binary (2,0%), 166 mixed direction (5,7%), 160 not disclosed (5,5%).

Direction: 22 women (36.7%), 37 men (61.7%), 1 mixed direction (1.7%)

Direction: 20 women (37,7%), 27 men (50,9%), 1 non-binary (1,9%), 5 mixed direction (9.6%)

Per section:

• 7 out of 17 films in Concorso internazionale were directed by women (41,2%)
• 7 out of 17 films in Piazza Grande (41,2%) were directed by women, while the film presented in Piazza Grande: Prefestival was directed by a man
• 7 out of 15 films in Concorso Cineasti del presente were directed by women (46,7%)
• 1 out of 10 films in Fuori concorso was directed by a woman (10%) and 1 film is a mixed co-direction (10%)
• 2 out of 10 films in Pardi di domani: Concorso Corti d’autore were directed by women (20%) and 2 films are a mixed co-direction (20%)
• 8 out of 20 films in Pardi di domani: Concorso internazionale were directed by women (40%) and 2 films are mixed co-directions (10%)
• 3 out of 10 films in Pardi di domani: Concorso nazionale were directed by women (30%) and 1 film is a mixed co-direction (10%)
• 6 out of 12 films in Pardi di domani: Evento speciale were directed by women (50%)
• the only film premiering in Open Doors: Screenings was directed by a woman
