Director, United States, Laos
Born to Laotian refugees, Mattie Do was raised in Los Angeles, but returned to Laos a decade ago. Her debut film, Chanthaly (2012), was the first Laotian film to screen outside of Southeast Asia. The film’s success led to Mattie’s selection for Cannes’ La Fabrique Cinéma, TIFF’s Talent Lab and Berlinale Talents. Do helped the Laotian government create the infrastructure necessary to bring foreign co-production to Laos, and produced Laos’ first American and Japanese co-productions. Her second film, Dearest Sister (2016), was Laos’ first submission for Best International Film at the 90th Academy Awards. Her latest film, The Long Walk (2019), premiered at the Giornate degli Autori in Venice, and garnered a Best Director award at Sitges. Do is Laos’ first and only female filmmaker.
