Locarno Shorts Weeks

27 days, 27 shorts, on demand

The Locarno Film Festival is thrilled to launch its first virtual event. From February 14 to March 12 this web pages will become a proper digital cinema, a home theater, a long encounter based on shorts.
The main talking point, especially for its stars scattered around the globe, is the Pardi di domani competition: the stage of the future, the horizon of upcoming cinema, the beloved and avidly attended Festival competition that focuses on young independent filmmakers and film school graduates who haven’t made a feature film yet. While preparing its own slice of #Locarno72, selecting the shorts that will be screened from August 7 to August 17, the Festival’s “soul of brevity” decided to recount its #Locarno70 experience, with a selection of 27 shorts from the official 2017 program. All of this has become a true virtual event, the first Video On Demand project in the history of the Locarno Film Festival.

The schedule? One short per day, for 27 days. Starting on Thursday, February 14, and until March 12, the Locarno Film Festival’s website will showcase a new short film each day, and all the shorts will remain available for a week after they’re uploaded. Right away, and for free.

Lili Hinstin, Artistic Director of the Locarno Film Festival, stated the following: «Shorts films are a particularly difficult art: it is not easy to convey the elements of mise en scène and achieve depth in a running time between 1 and 59 minutes. We are very proud to support this singular format in Locarno and to accompany the young filmmakers who commit to it».
