Eight directors from around the world have been chosen to take part with their short film projects in the Workshop I fiori (The Flowers), led by filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher as part of the Locarno Film Festival’s spring-time event L’immagine e la parola.

The organizers of I fiori (28 March – 5 April 2020) made their final selection from some seventy applicants worldwide, reflecting the growing international interest in the training Workshop developed by the Locarno Film Festival together with its partner for the initiative, the film school CISA – Conservatorio Internazionale di Scienze Audiovisive. Coming from as far afield as Thailand, the USA, Russia, Chile and Spain, the participants will arrive in the Canton Ticino during the period of L’immagine e la parola (28 – 29 March 2020) and will have nine days to complete their short films, together making an anthology feature that will be presented at the 73rd Locarno Film Festival (5 – 15 August 2020). Their new productions will gain additional visibility thanks to the partnership with RSI – Radiotelevisione svizzera di lingua italiana, which contributes to the project by supporting the making of the short films and will broadcast them on its television programmes.

The young filmmakers will be mentored by Alice Rohrwacher, a director whose gaze has always been closely focused on the rapport between humans, nature and the fruits of the earth. She will be the ideal guide for the participants as they interpret the Workshop’s keynote theme, exploring the agricultural landscapes of Italian-speaking Switzerland as the settings for their mini narratives. The locations — chosen in liaison with the Ticino Film Commission — will all be places in the Canton Ticino where agriculture, livestock raising, and conservation of traditional practices are carried on in close contact with the land and with preferential care for organic methods and inclusiveness.

The names of the international candidates selected, which include two projects from CISA – Conservatorio Internazionale di Scienze Audiovisive, are: Shalini Adnani, Macià Florit Campins, Agnese Làposi, Zhenia Kazankina, Corey Hughes, Pom Bunsermvicha, Denise Fernandes and Thomas Tattarletti. The twin themes of the environment and caring for the land will be pivotal in this training experience, allowing promising young Swiss and global filmmakers to hone their skills while at the same time raising the profile of a regional landscape that has featured only rarely on the big screen, but is rich in urban gardens, community cultivation projects, family-run organic farms, livestock pastures and fruit orchards.

On this aspect, Nadia Dresti, head of the Ticino Film Commission, a proactive supporter and contributor to the Workshop of L’immagine e la parola, commented: “Alice Rohrwacher’s vision of cinema and her acute sensibility towards environmental eco-sustainability will assist the young directors in making the most of local landscapes and situations, developing a vital, universal message which the Ticino Film Commission has very much at heart.

The events of L’immagine e la parola take place from 28 to 29 March and are open to the public, with the complete program due to be announced in the coming weeks. The Workshop I fiori, reserved for the selected participants, will run from 28 March through 5 April.
