ATTENTION:

As a result of developments in reported cases of COVID-19 infection, in line with precautions adopted by the Cantonal and Federal Authorities and following recent and still current guidelines from the City of Locarno, the Executive Board of the Locarno Film Festival has taken the difficult decision to cancel L’immagine e la parola, the Festival’s springtime literary event, originally scheduled to run from  28 to 29 March.

The program was announced today for L’immagine e la parola, the springtime event from the Locarno Film Festival which forms part of the Primavera Locarnese. Guest of honour will be Alice Rohrwacher, in attendance from the opening night on 28 March, with a screening of Lazzaro Felice (Happy as Lazzaro) in memory of Tiziana Soudani, who co-produced all of Rohrwacher’s films.

The eighth edition of L’immagine e la parola will run from 28 to 29 March in Locarno, with the PalaCinema, GranRex cinema and Cantonal Library as principal venues. Under the Artistic direction of Lili Hinstin, curated by Daniela Persico and coordinated by Nathalie Solimano, it will explore the creative universe of one of the most acclaimed filmmakers on the international scene today, Alice Rohrwacher. This year the established multi-disciplinary approach will be taken even further, bringing different artistic languages into conversation, as in one of the first events in the program: the inauguration of the exhibition of photographs by Simona Pampallona titled La luce dentro, on Saturday 28 March at 5.30 pm in the Il Rivellino LDV Art Gallery. The former military fortress will house the pictures taken by Pampallona as still photographer on the set of three of Rohrwacher’s films, in which she captured both the exceptional character of the director’s work and the lyrical, childlike essence of her imagery. The filmmaker herself will be present in Locarno’s GranRex cinema later that evening, at 8 pm, to introduce the screening of her most recent film Lazzaro Felice (Happy as Lazzaro), which took the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Festival in 2018. The event will also serve as a tribute to Tiziana Soudani: she will be remembered on this occasion by producers and filmmakers who worked with her and for the production company she founded, AMKA Films.

On Sunday 29 March at 10 am at the Cinema GranRex there will be the traditional screening for children, in collaboration with Cinemagia. This year’s title is Clorofilla dal cielo blu, the cult 1984 cartoon series by Swiss director Victor J. Tognola, co-produced by Frama Film International, SSR RSI, ARD, RTL and RC Canada, and restored for the occasion. The series is based on the novel by a writer much-loved by generations of youngsters around Europe, Bianca Pitzorno, with illustrations by Adelchi Galloni. The director will be in the theatre to introduce the screening.

In the afternoon of 29 March, at 4 pm in Locarno’s Cantonal Library, the focus will turn to the realms of great literature, with the panel discussion Corpo celeste: restituire al reale l’appartenenza a un’altra realtà. Alice Rohrwacher, who took the title of her debut film Corpo celeste from a collection of essays by Anna Maria Ortese, will debate the topicality of the Neapolitan writer’s thinking with academic and poet Antonella Anedda, moderated by Laura Accerboni from Babel TESS. Extracts from the book will be read by actress Tatiana Lepore, who has worked closely with Rohrwacher.

Education and training are a vital part of L’immagine e la parola. The application process is still open for the two masterclasses: the first, organized together with the Ticino Film Commission, will be held on Saturday 28 March from 1.30 to 4 pm at the PalaCinema in Locarno with the participation of producer Carlo Cresto-Dina, founder of the company Tempesta Film. He will be taking center stage to discuss sustainability and environmental issues in the film industry. Tempesta, with the Ticino-based AMKA Film, produced Alice Rohrwacher’s Le meraviglie (The Wonders), which won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2014. It was the first production internationally to adopt the EcoMuvi protocol, reducing its carbon footprint by some 5 tons of CO2. On Sunday 29 March, from 10.30 am to 1 pm, again in the PalaCinema, Alice Rohrwacher will present a session reviewing her filmography and career in film to date. The Italian director will be staying in the Canton until 5 April as tutor of the Workshop I fiori (The flowers), mentoring eight international filmmakers as they each create a short film on the Ticino region.

On Monday 30 March at 8.30 am at the Cinema GranRex the event will be brought to a close by a special screening of Le meraviglie (The Wonders) for local schools.

The training offering of L’immagine e la parola has been developed by the Locarno Film Festival together with the film school CISA – Conservatorio Internazionale di Scienze Audiovisive and is supported by the Ticino Film Commission. The productions from Workshop participants will enjoy enhanced visibility thanks to the partnership with RSI – Radiotelevisione svizzera di lingua italiana, which contributes to the project by supporting the making of the short films. L’immagine e la parola is backed up for the first time by the PalaCinema in Locarno, as well as enjoying support from EnjoyArena, the Majid Foundation, sustaining future young filmmakers, and Hertz. In addition, the project receives support from Il Rivellino LDV Art Gallery, the Hotel Du Lac and the ERS – Ente Regionale per lo Sviluppo del Locarnese e Vallemaggia.

Entry to all talks, screenings and masterclasses is free.
