The Festival del film Locarno’s Open Doors co-production lab is this year dedicated to the South Caucasus with a focus on Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. Each of the directors and producers will present their project at Locarno with the aim of finding financial partners and support to complete their film.

With support from the Swiss Foreign Ministry’s Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Open Doors supports and highlights directors and films from countries in the East and South where independent filmmaking is vulnerable. The eleventh edition will focus on the South Caucasus, the border region between Asia and Europe.

The selected projects are:

Abysm by Oksana Mirzoyan (Armenia)
House of Others by Rusudan Glurjidze (Georgia/France)
Khibula by George Ovashvili (Georgia/France/ Germany)
Long Gardens by Nika Shek and Sarik Hovsepyan (Armenia /Azerbaijan)
Madona by Nino Gogua (Georgia)
Naked in Baku by Arzu Gulijeva (Azerbaijan/Estonia)
Pipeline by Asif Rustamov (Azerbaijan/Germany)
See you in Chechnya by Alexander Kvatashidze (Georgia/France/Estonia/Netherlands)
Sleeping Lessons by Rusudan Pirveli (Georgia)
Territoria by Nora Martirosyan (Armenia/Switzerland/France)
The Second Journey by Lévon Minasian (Armenia)
The Valley by Arsen Azatyan and Nariné Mkrtchyan (Armenia)

Open Doors will take place 10-13 August, and this year offers a new training initiative: for the first time, co-production lab participants will be offered workshops on current issues and problems in independent film production and distribution. At the conclusion of the four days, three awards will be given to the best projects. The first prize, worth 50,000 CHF, is funded by the Open Doors initiative in collaboration with the town of Bellinzona and the Swiss production support fund Visions Sud Est. A second prize of 7,000 Euros is offered by the CNC (Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée), while ARTE will offer a prize, worth 6,000 Euros.

The initiative is organised in close collaboration with Locarno’s Industry Office and benefits from support from the following partners: ACE (Ateliers du Cinéma Européen), EAVE (European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs) and Producers Network Marché du Film (Cannes Festival). For this edition, Open Doors is pleased to be working with Joël Chapron, an expert on East European cinema and responsible for Central and Eastern Europe at Unifrance Films.

In addition to these initiatives for professionals, the section also comprises a set of screenings for the Festival audience, the Open Doors Screenings, which will present a selection of representative films from countries in the South Caucasus. The programme will be announced in mid-July.

Following the success of the season of films and lectures at the Biblioteca cantonale in Bellinzona last autumn, it has been decided to renew the initiative once again this year with Open Doors: Opening the Doors to World Cinema. The event will be organised with support from the town of Bellinzona and will take place on 10 October, 7 November and 5 December, 2013.

The eleventh edition of Open Doors will take place 10-13 August as part of the 66th Festival del film Locarno, 7-17 August 2013.
