In the village of Eldorado Paulo, poet and journalist, recalls his problems. He swung between two candidates for power: Porfirio Diaz, a politician in the capital, and Felipe Vieira, governor of the province of Alecrim. The latter, with the help of the Church, abandoned his electoral promises while Diaz obtained the support of Julio Fuentes and the media. Made under the Brazilian military dictatorship and considered Rocha’s most important and controversial, the film, which won the Youth Jury Award in Locarno in 1967, confirms the director’s insight into the persistent stalemate in Brazil and Latin America. Revolutionary for the time, it represents his poetic and political manifesto.
