A Young Festival

With the Young sidebar and Locarno Kids la Mobiliare, the Locarno Film Festival looks ahead

If you’re a child, a teenager or a young professional, on August 4-14 you will discover a Festival that is tailor-made for you. The Locarno Film Festival carries on in being an event with young people at its core. Thanks to partners who have been sharing the same ideals for years, Locarno74 will be eleven days of activities, workshops, mornings, afternoons, nights, screenings, inspirations and encounters focusing on younger viewers. These initiatives have the specific goal of recording emerging voices and trends and figuring out the values that drive new generations.

While we wait for a veritable international premiere in the festival universe, with the creation of a professorship at the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) devoted to the study of film festivals and the future of cinema (the Locarno Film Festival Professor for the Future of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts), the training program of Locarno74 will fire on all cylinders during the Festival in August. Locarno Young will naturally consist of Locarno Academy, with the return of Filmmakers, Critics and Industry; with the addition of the Documentary Summer School (DSS), organized in association with USI’s Media and Journalism Institute and the Semaine de la critique, and the Scuole senza frontiere project with CISA and other national and international film schools; the activities of Cinema&Gioventù; a new edition of BaseCamp and a new year of the YAB (Youth Advisory Board. Finally it will feature the activities of Locarno Pro U30 and the daily reports of Locarno LiveTV by Swisscom, made by CISA students.

Furthermore, Locarno will be a playground for children from August 4-14. Locarno Kids la Mobiliare has become a true Festival within the Festival: eleven days of activities, workshops and games made by the many partners who will help the youngest visitors discover the Festival and the movies.

These eleven days will also include the Locarno Kids Screenings, which are now a genuine section of the Festival and part of the official program. And there will be a chance to relax thanks to the new Kids Town, built by Kerim Seiler inside the Rotonda. Kids will also be a Locarno74 award: the 2021 Kids Award la Mobiliare. Who will receive it? Stay tuned…
