Day 9 | Today's Program

Giona A. Nazzaro's Summary

Dante Spinotti and Kim Gordon, two personalities who have left a deep mark in their artistic domains. The Italian master of light has created masterpiece after masterpiece. The former Sonic Youth bass player instead has radically transformed the ‘rock’ music scene (to put it plainly). Locarno is the elective ground to celebrate creativity in all its forms, as Stefano Knuchel – the core of our Academies – says constantly and with great conviction. Dante Spinotti is the recipient of the Pardo alla carriera and, to celebrate this event properly, we decided to welcome in Piazza Grande the ultimate director’s cut of the wonderful Heat (1995), supervised by Michael Mann and Dante Spinotti. A masterpiece finds new life and lights up our festival, which also boasts another unmissable masterpiece: Camillo Mastrocinque’s Scorned Flesh, a lost film from 1943 and now found and restored by the Cineteca del Friuli. Made in 1942, amid full-blown fascism, starring Fosco Giachetti and the magnificent Laura Solari, the film – which foreshadows Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958) – is a staggeringly modern work.
