The forthcoming 7th edition of L’immagine e la parola, as well as welcoming Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr as this year’s principal guest, is to include an additional tribute to the great Italian master Bernardo Bertolucci, who died in November of last year. Jacopo Quadri, who worked as the editor on several of Bertolucci’s films, is also to take part, and L’immagine e la parola will now run from 29 to 31 March.

The Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci was a much-appreciated guest at the Locarno Film Festival, which awarded him a Leopard of Honor in 1997 (when he presented Last Tango in Paris in Piazza Grande). In 1984 Bertolucci was given Carte Blanche to present a selection of his favorite movies, which he introduced personally in Locarno. At this upcoming event, just a few months after the filmmaker’s death, Locarno intends to recall his unwavering encouragement of the younger generations, who played such an important part in his late work. The prize-winning film editor and director Jacopo Quadri, who worked alongside Bertolucci from L’assedio (Besieged, 1998), will introduce his last film Io e te (Me and You, 2012), based on the best-selling novel by Niccolò Ammaniti: a moving, intimate ode of joy to life, whose adolescent stars were directed by the elder master when he was already struggling with the effects of illness.

Jacopo Quadri was born in Milan in 1964 and graduated from Rome’s CSC film school. He was editor on all of Mario Martone’s films, from Morte di un matematico napoletano (Death of a Neapolitan Mathematician, 1992) to Capri-Revolution (2018), and on all of the documentaries by Gianfranco Rosi, with whom he won a Golden Lion for Sacro GRA (2013) and a Golden Bear for Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea, 2016). As well as with Bertolucci, he has worked for directors such as Paolo Virzì, Zhang Yuan, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Francesca Archibugi, Marco Bechis, and Mohammed Soudani. Behind the camera, he has directed La scuola d’estate, a documentary on Luca Ronconi presented at the 2014 Torino Film Festival, Il paese dove gli alberi volano, selected for the Venice Film Festival in 2015, and, in 2017, Lorello e Brunello, again presented in Turin but this time in competition. It won several awards there before being selected for Berlin, Rotterdam, and Nyon.

Today also sees the opening of the application process for the two master classes to be held for film students by Béla Tarr and Jacopo Quadri. For full details go to the link (http://www.locarnofestival.ch/iepmasterclass).

L’immagine e la parola is organized in partnership with the Locarno-based film school CISA and is supported by the Ticino Film Commission, the Canton Ticino’s Department of Education, Culture and Sport (DECS), the Regional Authority for the Development of the Locarno Region and the Vallemaggia (ERS LVM), SwissLife and Hertz. This year’s edition has been rescheduled for 29 to 31 March – instead of 15 to 17 March as previously announced – for personal reasons affecting the principal guest, the Hungarian director Béla Tarr. As a result, the Workshop with Béla Tarr has also been postponed, and will now run from 31 March through 8 April. The full program of the 7th edition of L’immagine e la parola, drawn up jointly by Artistic Director Lili Hinstin with the event’s curator Daniela Persico, will be announced in February.
