Five things to know about Nicola Piovani

Nicola Piovani composed the score for L’Indomptée, the film by Caroline Deruas in the Concorso Cineasti del presente. Set in Rome, Piovani’s hometown, the film tells the story of a relationship between two young artists, in the magic setting of Villa Medici.

Here’s five things to know about Nicola Piovani:

  1.  Piovani has composed more than 150 scores for feature films, documentaries and TV series, and his first soundtrack assignment was to write the music for a series of newsreels for the Italian Students’ Movement in 1968.
     
  2. He became Federico Fellini’s trusted composer after the death of Nino Rota, writing music for the last three films of Fellini’s career.
     
  3.  He famously won the Oscar for Best Soundtrack for Roberto Benigni’s La vita è bella (Life Is Beautiful) in 1997, and went on to compose scores for the Italian director in Pinocchio and La tigre e la neve (The Tiger and the Snow).
     
  4. Piovani also toured all over the World with his musical shows, performing his compositions live. His show Concerto Fotogramma arrived in Locarno during the 2001 Festival.
     
  5. In 2013, he released an album titled Cantabile, containing 22 songs he wrote, sung by a variety of artists including Benigni, Francesco De Gregori, Jovanotti, Noa, Giorgia and Gianni Morandi.
