News from the Locarno Festival

Locarno70 winners at other Festivals around the World

A week of surprises for the Locarno Festival!

A scene of Cocote

Many films selected at Locarno70, are currently collecting prizes and awards at various international festivals, making us very proud.

We are very happy for Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias and his film Cocote, winner of our new competitive section Signs of Life, which has now won the João Bénard da Costa Special Jury Award at the Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival 2017. The movie has been awarded by the Jury composed by Ildikó Enyedi, Hanah Al-Shaykh, Momo Kodama, Ersi Sotiropoulos and presided by director David Cronenberg.

Another film presented at Locarno70 in the Concorso internazionale, is Wajib by Annemarie Jacir, which has won the main award for best movie and best actor at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata 2017. The Argentinian Festival has awarded even more Locarno movies: Cocote again, as best film in the Latin American Section, Cho-haeng (The First Lap) by Kim Dae-hwan (Concorso Cineasti del presente) for best screenplay and, finally, La Telenovela Errante by Raúl Ruiz and Valeria Sarmiento, in the Concorso internazionale section in Locarno, which has been given a Special Jury mention.

The 55th edition of Gijón/Xixón International Film Festival too has graced us with many positive emotions. The International Jury, composed by Whit Stillman, Andrea Jaurrieta, Cuca Escribano, Dennis Lim and Eugenia Mumenthaler has awarded the film Sashishi Deda (Scary Mother)by Ana Uruzshade, in Locarno already winner of the Swatch First Feature Award, with the prize for Best Director. This film will also be screened in New York tomorrow, Novemebr 28th, in occasion of the event organized by Kinoscope, the independent component of the art school The New School University. Meanwhile, the main character of the Concorso internazionale’s film Lucky, the recently deceased Harry Dean Stanton, posthumously won the award for Best Actor, whereas the film also received the Best Soundtrack Award.

Another curiosity: the project film of Open Doors 2016: En attendant les hirondelles by Karim Moussaoui, has been selected by the Gijón/Xixón International Film Festival for the special jury mention.

But let's close this series of great news with one that is, at least geographically speaking, near to us: Easy by Andrea Magnani, presented in the Concorso Cineasti del presente section, has won the 2017 edition of the Annecy Cinéma Italien Festival.
