Shān zhī běi (Osmosis)
The film looks at the interstices between deserts and oases, an area where man and land infiltrate one another. It reenacts through image the reconfiguration of a re-organized reality, and a winter vibrant in its slumber.
People become mere dots through Zhou’s lens, engulfed by the desert landscapes of the Niya region. Yet human interference can be felt in every image, precisely framed to appear otherworldly while being definitively of our earth and of our time. The silence sets a suspenseful stage for the battle to come between humans, animals and the land they inhabit. Or has it already begun? Time will tell.Julian Ross
