Limehouse, London. Thirteen-year-old Lucy, oppressed by her father, and Cheng Huan, a meek Buddhist from China, fall for each other, and their bond defies the ruthless violence of her alcoholic father. D.W. Griffith hones his innovation of film language and, with the help of Lillian Gish’s celebrated performance, directs one of his most intimate films, a Victorian-like melodrama on fatality and sacrifice.
