Twenty films that are part of the Locarno Film Festival’s long history, chosen by the directors of the twenty projects of The Films After Tomorrow. A selection of renowned and obscure films, comedies and tragedies, all of them timeless, reflecting the Festival’s spirit of discovery across twenty titles, dating from 1948 to 2019.
An anthology of twenty unmissable films that were presented in past editions of the Locarno Film Festival, contributing to their makers’ worldwide renown. This section features great classics and bold visions that have served as reference points for viewers and filmmakers throughout the decades, be it with unforgettable characters or new stylistic approaches. This selection, not coincidentally, was put together by all of the directors competing in the section The Films After Tomorrow. The history of the Locarno Film Festival is the guardian of these works that, often by achieving a breakthrough in their national film industries, have transcended the boundaries of geography and time, speaking directly to the future of cinema.
The films will be available online free of charge throughout Switzerland on the Festival's website and in various international territories thanks to the online streaming platform MUBI, the global reference point for the new cinephilia, and the exclusive VOD partner of the selection. Ten of the twenty selected films will also be shown in Locarno in theatrical screenings in cinemas, thanks also to the contribution of the Cinémathèque suisse, which provided some of the prints. The screenings, at the PalaCinema and GranRex in Locarno and the PalaVideo in Muralto, will also take place between August 5 and 15.
Tickets and passes for the screenings in these cinemas will be available to purchase on this website from July 29.
