Believing in cinema means providing concrete help to the filmmakers and producers who have given us unforgettable stories, emotions and memories every year. The key project of Locarno 2020 aims to support the films that haven’t taken shape yet because of the health crisis.
Starting over and going back to the basics to give cinema a future: after the pandemic brought the international filmmaking system to a halt, this is how the Locarno Film Festival chose to set up the project known as Locarno 2020 – For the Future of Films. The aim is to be close to the filmmakers and producers whose work has made past editions of the event unforgettable. They have given us beauty, emotion and hope. They have united distant people through debate. They have changed our worldview. In the current situation, believing in the cinema that Locarno showcases means helping it concretely, by giving our Pardi and other special awards to films that due to the crisis have not taken shape yet, but represent the cinema of tomorrow. It is a small gesture of help to create a virtuous cycle, showcasing the strong bond between arthouse cinema and the Festival, which is open to reconfiguring its structure in a show of solidarity with the entire filmmaking world.
In a time of great difficulty, we tried to imagine a project that could help those arthouse films that are increasingly difficult to produce, and are a cornerstone of our program. The 2020 Pardi are just a small incentive to show our closeness to the sector. Alongside the chosen filmmakers, we have crafted a map of our Festival for the audience, with the films that influence great cinema to this day.
The program of The Films After Tomorrow also features encounters and masterclasses with the selected filmmakers, organized in partnership with the Locarno Academy.
