James, un Américano-Laotien transporte les restes de son père jusqu’au Laos, pour réaliser la dernière volonté du défunt. Un jour, un parent arrive en ville et le cherche. Ils vont devoir voyager ensemble sur le Mékong et supporter leurs différences respectives.

Xaisongkham Induangchanthy filme le Laos à travers les yeux d'un étranger, James, qui découvre pour la première fois sa famille laotienne et la terre d'origine de sa mère. Tourné en cinémascope, le film nous invite à un voyage sur le Mékong où le temps et l'espace n'ont pas la même valeur pour les habitants ou pour James. Pour accepter cela, il devra se libérer de toutes les idées préconçues sur ses propres origines.
