The first Piazza Grande screening for the Ticino audience before the start of the Festival del film Locarno: Breakfast at Tiffany’s, a restored print of the Blake Edwards masterpiece, adapted from the story by Truman Capote, this year celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. It will also be the first screening in 4K, the digital high definitionformat that the Piazza Grande can now project.

In 1961 Edwards succeeded perfectly in combining laughter and tears in one of his finest films, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, unforgettable for the sublime Audrey Hepburn and Henry Mancini’s music (« Moon River », which won the Oscar for Best Song that year), and the composer subsequently became Blake Edwards’ regular collaborator.

The filmsignalled the triumphof big-screen eleganceand glamour, so much so that we forget how mundane the story is (the encounter between a gigolo writer and a young prostitute who has fled her native shores for a life as a kept woman in New York, always on the look-out for a millionaires ripe for the plucking.) It is impossible not to cry at the end of the film when Audrey Hepburn (who has lost her cat) and George Peppard kiss in the rain, on a street in New York.

A master of emotion as well as the most sophisticated farce, Edwards made a series of comedies that operate with clockwork precisionand an immaculate senseof timing, and have an undeniable visual effectiveness. But this one is perhaps the most original and perfect, still as funny and moving fifty years after it was made.
