Delon, le don
This evening on the Piazza Grande we will have the pleasure and honour of presenting a Lifetime Achievement Award to Alain Delon.
Is there any there any European actor more deserving of the status of world movie star? Is there any other actor of his generation who can boast of having featured in so many major films and masterpieces? Is there any other actor who has proved as irresistible to so many great and such diametrically opposed directors: Clément, Visconti, Antonioni, Melville, Zurlini, Losey, Godard. Is there any other actor with the capacity to arouse so much desire, admiration and emotional excess in women as well as men?
“Delon, le don” was the title Les Cahiers du cinéma gave an interview published for the occasion of a Cinémathèque française tribute to Alain Delon in 1996. A felicitous anagram on his name (don = gift in French) to define a great film actor both hyper professional and instinctive, a workhorse who from the very start has been smart enough to understand that in front of the camera it is enough “to be”.
“His films are, first of all, documentaries about Delon” wrote Jean-François Rauger in a fine article on the actor, “L’unique et son double” (in L’œil qui jouit, éditions Yellow Now). Documentaries made by some of the greatest stylists in modern cinema.
Alain Delon’s first gift is obviously his beauty. His second, to have created a unique relationship between his image, filmmakers and viewers.
