Celebrating Street Photography

The last year the Festival del film Locarno hosted two Bally artists without knowing it. While the NeverCrew duo (Pablo Togni and Christian Rebecchi, Bally Artists of the Year 2012) were at the Spazio Forum to create an amazing piece of art which celebrated cinema, the photographer Matteo Fieni was taking possession of Locarno streets with the project Ritratti Metropolitani. The same project that gave him the title of Bally Artist of the Year 2013 some months later.

The Bally Cultural Foundation and the Festival del film Locarno are, then, always more intimately connected. It is enough to walk along via Ramogna and look at the totems which tell the story of the cultural commitment of one of the world's most famous brand in the luxury sector. Or having a promenade anywhere near Piazza Grande, where Togni and Rebecchi are living the experience of the Festival – like simple and passionate cinePhiles, this year. And we are sure that also Matteo Fieni (born on February 3, 1976 in Mendrisio) will be around, one day or the another.

After studying at the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Milan and at the Università della Svizzera italiana in Lugano, Fieni took up his photographic discourse with "Ritratti Metropolitani", started as a personal street photography project which consisted in making portraits of passers-by. In 2012 the Ticinese artist has been awarded with a performance RM#26 in Italy (Premio Metrocubo 2012, Ancona) and with the Swiss Photo Award (ewz 2012, Zurich). This year, he received the prize sponsored by the Bally Cultural Foundation.
Are you an artist excelling in the figurative arts, aged between 21 and 55 years and extremely motivated to be the next Bally Artist of the Year? Submissions are open until December 2014 on www.fondazionebally.ch.
