The Executive Board of the Locarno Film Festival has ratified the line-up put forward by Artistic Director Lili Hinstin for the Selection Committee which will join her in drawing up and preparing the program for the 72nd edition of the Festival.

The new committee green-lighted today by the Locarno Film Festival’s Executive Board will assist Artistic Director Lili Hinstin in setting up the program.

Lili Hinstin, the Locarno Film Festival’s Artistic Director commented: “The Selection Committee that will pick the entries for Locarno’s 72nd edition reflects the image of the Festival and its history: young, free and daring. Our choices will map out a definition of contemporary practice, for which the Festival has always been both witness and guardian.”

Lili Hinstin has put together a young team with a strong international profile and a keen eye for both the new generations and, at the same time, for new pathways in auteur filmmaking and fresh territories to explore. The international scope of the line-up emerges clearly from the first names who will be selecting full-length features: Mathilde Henrot from France, a programmer with the Sarajevo Film Festival and co-founder of website Festival Scope Pro; Nicholas Elliott, New York correspondent for Cahiers du Cinéma and member of the programming committee for the Flaherty Film Seminar, Julian Ross, programmer with the Rotterdam International Film Festival and research fellow at the University of Westminster, Daniela Persico, an Italian film critic and programmer who since 2013 has worked with the Locarno Film Festival in other artistic roles and, Antoine Thirion, founder of Online-Magazine Independencia and member of the selection committee for Cinéma du Réel and curator for the retrospective of FID Marseille. For short films, the new Artistic Director and her staff will be joined by Charlotte Corchète, researcher at the Paris-based EHESS (School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences) and formerly on the staff of the film collection at the Centre Pompidou and the selection committee for the Entrevues Belfort Festival, plus Swiss filmmaker Tizian Büchi, who as a long-established programmer with a number of Swiss film festivals will be casting an expert gaze on German-language and Swiss cinema. The last two names to complete the line-up are both familiar at Locarno: from England, Liz Harkman, who has over fifteen years of experience in the British film industry, where she has been a leading figure with institutions such as the British Film Institute and the UK Film Council; and from Serbia, Belgrade-born director and producer Stefan Ivančić, whose works have garnered numerous national and international awards and have been selected and supported by the Cannes Film Festival (Cinéfondation selection), CNC, Visions Sud Est and Eurimages.

The 72nd Locarno Film Festival will take place from 7 to 17 August 2019.
