Initial assessement of the 64th edition of the Festival

Today, Tuesday August 16, an extraordinary AGM of the Festival del film Locarno was held, at which the Presidency and the Directorate made an initial assessment of the recent event.

President Marco Solari expressed the hope “that the Festival’s success will help persuade Locarno residents to aspire to become a centre of excellence for the moving image”.

Marco Cacciamognaga, COO, presented initial figures: “total audience numbers for the 64th Festival amounted to 159,503 (compared to 148,436 in 2010), an increase of circa 7.5%, mainly due to the strong attendance on the Piazza Grande (61,700 spectators, compared to 52,300 in 2010). Audience figures for other venues remained stable with 97,803 spectators (2010: 96,136) despite the slight reduction in the number of films”.

The Festival once again drew a large number of film professionals this year, with a total of 3,950 delegates (2010: 3,852) of whom 900 were journalist and 900 industry (251 buyers) accreditations respectively. Furthermore, during the Open Doors lab, 434 co-production meeting were held.

Artistic Director Olivier Père said that he was “highly satisfied with the success in terms of audiences, media coverage and professionals”. The 64th edition of the Festival del film Locarno concluded on Saturday August 13 with the traditional closing ceremony on the Piazza Grande. The Pardo d’oro 2011 went to the Argentinian-Swiss co-production Abrir puertas y ventanas (Back to Stay), a first feature by young female director Milagros Mumenthaler.
