Program for the 71st Locarno Festival announced

The official program of the 71st edition of the Locarno Festival was announced at a press conference today, Wednesday 11 July.

The line-up for the official juries was also announced as were tributes to Wolf-Eckart Bühler, Pierre Rissient, Francis Reusser and Claude Lanzmann.

Competitive sections

Piazza Grande

17 full-length features and 1 short film, including 9 world premieres, will be screened in Piazza Grande, the open-air theater packed every night by an audience of up to 8,000 people.

Concorso internazionale

15 full-length features, including 13 world premieres, compete for the Pardo d'oro.

Concorso Cineasti del presente

The Locarno competition dedicated to discovery includes 16 first or second features, with 13 world premieres.

Signs of Life

The section that explores the frontier territories of cinema, investigating experimental forms of narration and innovation in filmic language, includes 7 full-length and 7 short features, with 13 world premieres.

Pardi di domani

Two competitions, one reserved for Swiss short films and a second international section, with 36 world premieres.

 

Non-competitive sections

Fuori Concorso

An open space for works by master filmmakers and directors of international stature.

Histoire(s) du cinéma

Film history through the lens of the protagonists of Locarno71.

Retrospettiva

This year’s Retrospective on Leo McCarey (1898-1969) includes 109 films.

Open Doors

This year the section that promotes and fosters independent filmmaking in the global South and East concludes its pathway of research into the film industries of South Asia.

 

The 71st Locarno Festival will take place from 1 to 11 August 2018.
