The Spanish filmmaker Víctor Erice will receive the Pardo alla carriera. The tribute will be accompanied by a series of screenings and a conversation with the Festival audience.

The 67th edition of the Festival del film Locarno will pay tribute to the Spanish director Víctor Erice in awarding him the Pardo alla carriera. For the Locarno audience it will offer an opportunity to review his body of work, consisting of three features and a series of medium-length and short films, whose poetry and profundity have left their mark on European cinema’s recent history. These highly particularized stories manage to achieve universal significance, and contain profound reflections about time.

Born in San Sebastian in 1940, Erice first feature was El Espiritu de la colmena (The Spirit of the Beehive, 1973), considered one of the masterpieces of Spanish cinema. Ten years later he made El Sur, which, as in the previous film, revolves around a father and daughter relationship, conveyed through memories. His third and most recent feature, El sol del membrillo (1992) featured the painter Antonio López and follows the making of a painting, almost like a working diary.

Carlo Chatrian, the Festival’s Artistic Director, comments: “ I am delighted to welcome Víctor Erice to Locarno. His films may be few in number, but are all extremely important in the context of modern cinema, and bear the hallmark of an independent and coherent filmmaker, who is able to give a very personal form to his stories, combining private and collective memory. He has one of those unique voices that the Festival del film Locarno has pledged to recognize and support.

The tribute will be completed by a conversation open to the Festival audience.

The 67th Festival del film Locarno takes place 6 – 16 August 2014; requests for press accreditation will be taken up until 11 July.
