Open Doors 2019 highlights South-East Asia and Mongolia

Open Doors shines the spotlight onto the vibrant independent scene of the Asian continent for three more years (2019-2021), hosting a delegation of 50+ talents from Southeast Asian countries (Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines) and from Mongolia for the very first time.

Sophie Bourdon, Head of Open Doors: “This region has already given us some great directors of our time, who have contributed to memorable moments in the history of the Locarno Film Festival. But Asia has got more surprises to disclose, especially thanks to a very proactive new generation of filmmakers and producers whose dream is to have their stories heard more widely.

International professionals attending the Locarno Film Festival will have the opportunity to connect with their peers from the Asian continent through the following activities:

Open Doors Hub:
The coproduction platform presenting eight promising projects from the region seeking international cooperation.

Open Doors Lab:
The incubating lab features nine production talents who significantly contribute to the development of their local independent film scene.

One-to-one meetings with the project holders of the Hub and the Lab participants will take place August 10 - 12 and can be requested at meetings@locarnofestival.ch.

Open Doors Screenings:
More than twenty filmmakers and producers will attend the Open Doors days and introduce their works to the audience in Locarno, as part of the Open Doors Screenings section.
The selection curated by Asia expert Paolo Bertolin and short film programmer Delphine Jeanneret presents this year short and feature films from Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Mongolia.

The participants of Open Doors will have the chance to compete for monetary and in-kind awards.

The Open Doors Grant worth 50,000 Swiss francs is financed by the Swiss production support fund Visions Sud Est (backed by SDC) and by the City of Bellinzona. France’s CNC will offer a prize worth 8,000 euros, while ARTE Kino will fund a prize worth 6,000 euros.

In-kind awards are granted in collaboration with several institutions including the Norwegian film fund Sørfond; the Winterthur International Short Film Festival, in partnership with Villa Sträuli; as well as two new collaborations with Moulin d’Andé-CECI Award and Rotterdam Lab & IFFR Pro.

Open Doors is an initiative organized by Locarno Pro as part of the Locarno Film Festival and benefits from the longstanding partnership with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
