Mike Medavoy, an exceptional producer
Working in the film industry for almost forty years, and producing over three hundred films, Mike Medavoy is one of the great visionaries of American cinema.
By turns an agent, studio head (United Artists, Orion, Tri-Star Pictures) and finally producer in his own right, he has discovered and promoted the New Hollywood filmmakers and their successors (Terrence Malick, Milos Forman, Woody Allen, Oliver Stone, Jonathan Demme…), greenlit and been part of the success of numerous films that have become classics (Rocky, Apocalypse Now, Terminator, Dances with Wolves…).
Paradoxically, it was
not until 2000 that Mike Medavoy’s name appeared on the credits of a film, The 6th Day starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
He co-founded his own production company Phoenix Pictures with Arnie Messer in 1995, where he produced, among other films, David Fincher’s Zodiac, Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan which won the Best Actress Oscar for Natalie Portman and was a nominated in the Best Producer category.
We are proud award the Raimondo Rezzonico Prize to a man who stands out for his commitment to auteurs, his modesty and his intellectual honesty. In his memoirs « You’re Only as Good as Your Next One », Medavoy describes his failures as well as his successes, his finest moments as well as his mistakes: the most famous being his rejection of Pulp Fiction, when Quentin Tarantino came to ask him to produce it!Olivier Père
