When Polish director Kryzystof Zanussi’s third feature, Iluminacja, is included in Locarno’s Histoire(s) du cinéma, it is to mark 40 years of the Ecumenical Jury at the festival.

True, in 1973 the portrait of the young student looking for the meaning of life was awarded Locarno’s ecumenical trophy, adding the Pardo d’oro and the international critics’ FIPRESCI prize.

Head of Poland’s TOR Film Studio, Zanussi, who is a professor at the Silesian University in Katowice (Poland) as well as professor of European Film at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee (Switzerland), is in Locarno for the screening and to lecture at the Festival’s Summer Academy, this year attended by 80 students and young film professionals.
