Founded with the aim of helping develop the abilities of emerging talents, the Locarno Academy is a Locarno Film Festival training project for young directors, professionals, students and film critics.
The Academy was born from a desire to build on Locarno’s attributes as a site of productive encounters, exchange of views and reflection on film, taking full advantage of the Festival’s infrastructure and its numerous guests.
The program offers a range of training options, spanning from general film education, training in film criticism for young journalists, to workshops for the upcoming generation of industry professionals and emerging directors working on their first film.
A selected group of promising young talents from all over the world are selected and invited to participate in one of the Locarno Academy’s three initiatives: Filmmakers Academy, Critics Academy, and Industry Academy.
The Locarno Filmmakers Academy offers fifteen filmmakers from all over the world, daily meetings with directors, producers and other internationally known figures in the film industry. Guests who have held masterclasses in previous editions include: Werner Herzog, Abel Ferrara, Lav Diaz, Pedro Costa, Agnès Varda, Víctor Erice, Aleksandr Sokurov and Michael Cimino. Since 2014 six young talents selected for the Cannes Festival’s Résidence Cinéfondation also participate.
The Locarno Critics Academy is an initiative by the Locarno Film Festival addressing about ten young film critics. These selected critics will be invited to cover the Locarno Festival, with reviews on the films in its programme, articles on collateral events, in-depths on its sections or interviews with its guests. The reviews and the articles of all participants may be published in the LocarnoDaily, on Indiewire, FilmComment.com, MUBI, Filmbulletin, swissinfo.ch, Filmexplorer. Swiss participants will work under the editorial guidance of the Swiss Association of film journalists (ASGC) and of the cultural publicist Centre of Zurich Arts University (ZHdK). The Locarno Critics Academy is supported by the Federal Office for Culture (UFC).
Industry Academy is an initiative of the Industry Office of Locarno Festival taking place in the context of the Locarno Academy and Locarno Pro. Since its first edition, the Industry Academy has gathered young professionals several countries (Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Mexico, Poland, Sweden, United-Kingdom, USA and Spain), offering each year the ten participants an intensive six-day workshop during the Festival.
Keeping its strong European and international dimension, the Academy gives a unique chance to the young generation to have a better grasp of the industry world and its challenges, get connected with professionals such as distributors, heads of acquisitions, marketing specialists, senior programmers, sales agent, exhibitors but also producers and representatives of funds and films institutes, as well as those attending the other academies such as the Filmmakers’ and Critics’.
